Movement is Medicine: Finding Balance on and off the Trail
Just the other night, I lay awake staring at the ceiling, silently wishing it was Friday. Not because I had big weekend plans - no, because I wanted to cancel them and just sleep. But sleep wouldn’t come. And when it doesn’t, at least for me, it usually means one of two things: either I’m anxious about something, or I’m paying the painful price of skipping the gym for too long.
This time, it was the latter. My arms, legs, back, and even the small muscles I didn’t know existed were staging a full-blown protest after this week’s workouts. Lesson learned: comfort has consequences.
Still, I had a hike planned with my team, and there was no way I was going to bail. So I made a deal with my body - pain and I would have to coexist. We’d negotiate our way to the summit, spend the day in the wilderness, and hopefully come down not just alive, but renewed.
That’s the paradox of movement. It hurts sometimes. It demands sacrifice. But in the same breath, it heals. Movement is medicine.
The Trio of Daily Wins
A while back, I came across the idea of aiming for three wins every day:
-
A physical win - move your body, whether that’s walking, running, or dancing in your living room.
-
An intellectual win - read, create, learn something new.
-
A spiritual win - pray, meditate, practice gratitude.
When these three are in harmony, life feels balanced, like a bicycle that only stays upright if you keep pedaling. But neglect one, and equilibrium slips away. It’s not about perfection; it’s about motion.
And here’s the kicker - rarely do we balance these spheres alone. That’s where community comes in.
Finding Your Tribe
We’re wired for togetherness. Even the fiercest solo hikers among us know the trail feels lighter when you share it. The people you walk with - whether through forests or through life - keep you accountable, honest, and moving forward.
It reminds me of the tale of the ugly duckling, a swan born in the wrong nest. For a long time, it tried to fit in where it didn’t belong. But the real transformation happened when it found its tribe - other swans who mirrored its beauty back.
That’s what finding your tribe feels like. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being recognized, accepted, and supported as you are.
The Beauty in Balance
Life, like a hike, is both beautiful and brutal. Some days you summit, some days you turn back early, and some nights you lie awake wishing for more sleep. But each moment - whether heavy with soreness, laughter, rejection, or triumph - carries its own lesson.
For me, this week’s lesson is simple: move your body, move your mind, move your spirit. Keep pedaling. Keep walking. Keep showing up, even when it hurts.
And along the way, may you find your tribe - the people who push you up the mountain when you’re tired, who remind you to be kind to yourself, and who celebrate with you when you finally descend back into the noise of civilization.
Because in the end, that’s the essence of it all: move, connect, create, and live fully.
